Tools for Service Providers Working
With Victims of Gender-Based Violence

The following tools were developed by IPPF/WHR staff and affiliates based on
recent experiences approaching gender-based violence in the context of sexual
and reproductive health care. These tools are a work-in-progress and we welcome
your suggestions and comments.*

What is Gender-Based Violence?
2. Screening
Tool: This tool assists service providers by providing simple and direct
questions to ask clients about different types of violence.
3. Sample
Stamp for Client Intake Form to Record Information on GBV: Designed to
accompany the Screening Tool, the Stamp allows providers to adapt their client
intake forms easily to include information about gender-based violence.
4. Management
Checklist: This is designed to help coordinators ensure that the most
essential steps in the process of developing a GBV project are being carried out
effectively.
5. Legal
Framework for Service Providers Addressing Gender-Based Violence: What
providers need to know in order to help victims.
*It is important to note that many
already existing tools produced by a variety of individuals and organizations
were used as background information for the elaboration of these documents.

Basta! The Health Sector Addresses Gender-Based Violence
This training video for health care providers and others who may be in a
position to help women living in situations of violence, frames the issue of
violence against women as a human rights violation and a public health problem.
¡Basta! Women Say No to Violence
This video is intended as a general sensitization tool on the issue of gender-based
violence (GBV), providing key definitions and addressing some of the most common
myths about GBV.
2008 Annual Report
In 2008, our 41 Member Associations in Latin America and the Caribbean provided
29, 819,125 services. We helped improve individual lives, change attitudes and
reduce poverty’s grip throughout the region. We drove on rugged mountain roads
to serve women living in remote villages, miles from the nearest clinic. We were
in the forefront of opposition to restrictive laws repressive policies and that
deprive women of their dignity and the right to determine their own reproductive
destinies. We also empowered young people through peer education programs and
increased their access to appropriate sexual and reproductive health education,
information and services.
Addressing Gender Violence in a Reproductive and Sexual Health Program in
Venezuela
This publication describes how our Member Association in Venezuela, PLAFAM, met
the needs of victims of violence by recognizing the importance of womens' social
context.
Improving the Health Sector Response to Gender-Based Violence
This manual provides tools and guidelines for program managers working in
developing countries. It includes practical tools to determine provider
attitudes to gender-based violence, legal definitions and responsibilities, and
quality of care.

The International Planned
Parenthood Federation/Western Hemisphere Region (IPPF/WHR) was founded in 1954,
and is one of six regions that comprise the International
Planned Parenthood Federation. IPPF/WHR is the only region of the IPPF that
is a separately incorporated entity. It is a not-for-profit, tax-exempt
organization, incorporated in New York in 1954.
