Human
Rights and International Education Projects College of Education
I am in the process of developing a Center for the
Inclusion of Human Rights in the Curriculum of the Schools.
We are putting together a project that will work with pre-service
educators and teacher trainers to include this material at all levels of the
public schools. Our initial work
will be with undergraduate teacher education majors and with the faulty that
teaches this group. Our plan is to then move to an in-service mode with teachers
in the field.
We have had a series of workshops over the last 4 years on this issue and the
response by both teachers and junior high and secondary school students has been
very favorable. More often than not
it is an issue of getting people together in the school to infuse these concepts
without feeling they are neglecting the academic side of the teaching.
I would welcome others doing similar work to share with all of us what they are
doing, how they are accomplishing these tasks and the positives and negatives of
the strategies used.
