The Centre is one of an alliance of five research centres in Canada initially funded by the federal government following the Montréal Massacre on December 6, 1989. The London Centre was proposed by a group of activists, agency workers and researchers from Fanshawe College, The University of Western Ontario and The London Coordinating Committee to End Woman Abuse (representing approximately thirty agencies). The Centre was created in 1993 and continues to be a collaborative venture serving both local and national communities in producing useful information and tools to assist in the daily work against violence towards women and children.

The purpose of the Centre is to promote the development of community-centred action research on violence against women and children. The Centre facilitates individuals, groups and institutions representing the diversity of the community to pursue research questions and training opportunities related to the understanding and prevention of abuse.

The four streams of the Centre's current work to end violence against women and children are:

-- Civil and Criminal Remedies

-- Prevention, Education and Training

-- Evaluation of Intervention Strategies

-- Latin American/Carribean Initiatives

For more information, read about the Research Committees.

We provide consultation on research and evaluation, create and distribute a series of publications and maintain a resource library for on-site use by members of the community as well as students and faculty. We also sponsor workshops and seminars

The Centre has five objectives:

1.Emphasize interdisciplinary research and training that will foster ongoing collaboration between academic faculty and students, service providers, and victims of violence using feminist research perspectives.

2.Undertake and complete a series of collaborative research projects that will examine the "life-cycle" of violence against women and children, from the early development of childhood attitudes regarding gender-based aggression through to rehabilitative projects, such as counseling for male batterers and legal remedies for abused women and children.

3.Produce action-oriented research that will result in useable products in a variety of forms, including curricular resource material, videos, and other demonstrative products which will be accessible to members of local, provincial, national, and global communities.

4.Test all projects against the standards of cultural sensitivity and applicability to the most high risk populations in the community, including people with disabilities, First Nations people, and members of immigrant and refugee communities.

5.Represent a diverse community through a governance structure involving an advisory board composed of academics, service providers, and representatives of different community groups within London and area.
