10th Annual International Conference on Conflict Resolution (ICR)

NOW MORE THAN EVER ~

Dear Colleagues,

Enclosed is a notice on the 10th ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON CONFLICT  RESOLUTION (ICR) held May 9-19, 2002 in St. Petersburg, Russia (formal  conference May 10-15).  We also invite you to visit our Home page at  http://ahpweb.org/cbi/home.html">http://ahpweb.org/cbi/home.html

AT A TIME OF HEIGHTENED UNCERTAINTY AND FEAR, there is a critical need for  new thinking, new vision, new understanding, and new ways of relating with  each other in an increasingly interdependent global community.

SUPPORT: The Annual ICR Conference has been supported by Former President  Clinton, Former President Yeltsin, St. Petersburg Governor Jakovlev, and is  endorsed by over 60 organizations and universities internationally. It is  listed in numerous international directories and included as part of the  Hague Appeal for Peace Civil Society Calendar.

PARTICIPANTS have come from over 55 countries and all continents, providing  excellent opportunities for important networking contacts with  representatives of many organizations. This event attracts hundreds of  individuals in key positions in their respective societies who can model and  teach skills to many others for practical application in their personal and  professional lives.

We invite your participation and APPRECIATE YOUR SHARING THIS INFORMATION  with colleagues and relevant organizations to assist in raising awareness of  this important event.

The 2002 PROGRAM is currently being developed and we continue to receive  presentation proposals. In addition to the variety of topics being addressed  are an increased emphasis on the dynamics of terrorism and "The Other"  throughout the world, and on issues in the Middle East.

Presentation samples will be posted in the near future, and the full version  will be available prior to the conference date.  In the meantime, the  previous conference program, a full list of endorsing and sponsoring  organizations, registration and proposal forms, costs, and logistical details  are available through our web site.  The previous program can provide insight  into the content and format of the conference. Our web site also offers  Information on other efforts of CBI, including the "Catastrophic Trauma  Recovery Project" being established to provide trauma treatment training to  local relief workers in the Balkans and Middle East.

** A longer, full conference announcement, as well as a list of endorsers,  forms, and logistics are available by separate e-mail, fax, or land mail upon  request.         The program has a broad context and FOCUSES on ALL ASPECTS AND LEVELS OF  CONFLICT from a relational perspective - from the intrapersonal - to the  interpersonal - to relationships between groups, organizations, cultures,  religious traditions, and societies - and ultimately between us and other  species. The experiential nature of the Conference is viewed as one of it's  most important qualities. The formation of a CROSS-CULTURAL INTENTIONAL  COMMUNITY is a living laboratory of sorts that is essential for engaging and  integrating formal learning from workshops.

A strength lies in the blending and interfacing of DIVERSE APPROACHES,  PERSPECTIVES, and CONTEXTS, which allows for further development and creative  application in ones own work.  Presentations offer a wide range, including  well-defined curriculums and training programs, creative exploratory  research, and in-process experiences. In addition, the MULTI-DISCIPLINARY,  MULTI-CULTURAL OPEN FORUM provides a rich intellectual environment for  dynamic dialogues that examine new ways of conceptualizing and perceiving  conflicts, differences, and issues of personal/global security, as well as  managing them. It is designed as both a teaching and learning experience for  presenters and participants alike.

There are invaluable opportunities during and after the conference for  NETWORKING and meeting with colleagues and relevant organizations from around  the world. Each year dynamic collaborations and associations, whether  concrete action-oriented, education and training, or research in nature, have  come out of the contacts at this conference. Some of these activities  directly involve the conference sponsors, but many are the initiative and  work of those who simply meet there. CBI continues support of these efforts  through linking them and providing resources and training materials via our  web site.

The OFFICIAL PROGRAM LANGUAGES are English and Russian. Interpreters are  assigned to each presentation and event, and are also available in the  general conference milieu. The conference is held just outside St. Petersburg  at a Russian resort hotel located on the Finnish gulf.

Historically, the ICR Conference has been funded solely by registrations.   All participants - including presenters - pay their own expenses for  attending.  By design, hard-currency registrations are used to help subsidize  costs of low income participants from economically impoverished societies.  This formula has allowed us to produce now 10 successful, truly  cross-cultural, annual events.  Members of endorsing organizations receive a  $100 discount on full hard-currency registrations. Shorter or longer stays  are also available (see registration form re: this and other discounts).

After reading through this material we encourage you to contact us directly  at our e-mail, fax, or phone numbers with any questions or requests for more  details and background information.

Thank you in advance for your help in sharing this information. The Annual  ICR Conference continues to grow significantly in impact and global  participation.  We are always appreciative of the many individuals and  organizations internationally who assist in it's success by publicizing this  event throughout the year, and to our expanding list of official endorsers.

IN THE MIDST OF RISING TERRORISM AND STRUGGLING PEACE NEGOTIATIONS on the  formal governmental level, the world faces a historic choice between old,  failing paradigms of separateness and "the other," or recognition of our  common, elemental interdependence as human beings. We invite you and your  colleagues to join us this May in St. Petersburg for the 2002 10th Annual  International Conference on Conflict Resolution to endorse the power of  nonviolence in creating a universal culture of peace, and share effective  methods to achieve it.

Sincerely,

Steve Olweean, Director Conference Co-coordinator
