European Network on Conflict, Gender, and Violence
2001 meeting

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

We have been working with representatives from the WAVE network ("Women Against Violence Europe") to hold this year's meeting in Vienna, Austria. While the logistical details are still in the works, the dates for our meeting are October 11-13, 2001.  Please mark your calenders!

As we have done for some of our previous meetings, we'll again split the workload for the preparation: WAVE will do local organization, I'll be putting together the conference program.

In general, the purpose of our meetings is three-fold:

1. To highlight ongoing research from across Europe;
2. To provide a forum for friendly, open dialogue across disciplinary and other divides;
3. And to explore avenues for further collaboration.

Please be aware that the expertise and interests of members of this network are fairly wide ranging and span the social sciences and related disciplines, including various issues pertaining to gender and violence, but also matters of family and couple conflict, and topics related to self, group membership, and identity.

 Conference Format:

Please note that the format of these meetings differs from that of some academic conferences.

There are no parallel sessions; all topics are discussed by the entire group (strenuous at times but also very stimulating!).

Each session of about 1.5 hours is introduced by a "speaker" who may report on her or his own work or give a more general overview of the topic (usually takes up 15 to 30 minutes).  The remainder of the session is reserved for discussion.  Throughout the meeting there will be ample time for informal discussion as well.

Typically, Day 1 of the program serves to build connections among participants and highlight regional work.  Hopefully, being in Vienna will make the meeting more accessible to our colleagues from Eastern/Southeastern Europe.

Day 2 is devoted primarily to the discussion of specific topics. So far, thematic suggestions include integrated approaches to violence against women and violence against men.  Other suggestions are welcome.

Day 3 usually serves to wrap up the meeting and plan future projects.

Recognizing that participants may come from very different professional and linguistic backgrounds we hope this format will facilitate the development of common ground and good dialogue.  Conference language will be English. We encourage all multi-lingual participants to pool their linguistic expertise and interpret whenever necessary.

 PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO ATTEND, WHICH TOPICS YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE ADDRESSED, AND IF YOU WOULD BE INTERESTED IN BEING A SPEAKER.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Best regards,
Renate
