Male violence as a societal problem

A multi-sectorial conference on males as perpetrators and victims of violence, Umeå university, Sweden, 1-3 February 2002

Violence, assault and threats are serious societal problems all over the world. Both men and women are victims of violence, but the perpetrator is almost always male. The causes of male violence are complex and have to be understood from a multi-factorial point of view. Social, biological, historical, cultural and individual factors are important for a better understanding of this problem. The aim of the conference is to provide a meeting place for researchers who seldom meet each other. We think sharing and exchanging insights from different disciplines will foster a multi-sectorial research perspective on men's violence against women, children and other men.

The conference will comprise plenary lectures in the morning and workshops in the afternoons. Researchers and students from different disciplines are invited to submit abstracts for the multidisciplinary seminars on biological, psychiatric, social, psychological, historical and cultural aspects of male violence. Abstracts that are accepted will be allocated to the different seminars to strengthen multidisciplinary discussion.

Abstracts should contain a title, aim, method and results or conclusions (250 words maximum). Abstracts should be sent by e-mail or post before 1 November 2001.

Further information can be obtained from Jonas Liliequist and Katarina Weinehall. A second announcement with information on venue, key note speakers, accommodation and the preliminary program will be available early in October.
