European feminist research conference in Sweden 2003

The next European Feminist Research Conference following Bologna will be held in Lund, Sweden, during August 2003, and hosted by the Centre for Gender Studies at Lund University, reports News from NIKK. Together with AOIFE and the Department of Gender Studies at Linköping University, the Centre for Gender Studies at Lund University, will be organizing the conference. Gender Studies in Lund has previously hosted an ATHENA network meeting as well as symposiums and lecture series on European Gender Studies.

Along with the goal of presenting the research front in gender studies, the Centre hopes that this conference will offer a space to renew previous research contacts and facilitate further research cooperation between the Nordic countries and other European countries. Further aims of the conference are to present the interdisciplinary breadth of European feminist research and to include the work of the next generation of researchers.

The main themes of the conference are yet to bed decided, so all suggestions and ideas are welcome. For more information, please contact Sara Goodman, Centre for Gender Studies, Lund University, e-mail sara.goodman@genus.lu.se.

Research School for Gender Science

A research school focused on gender studies will be established in Sweden. This was revealed when Minister of Education and Science, Thomas Östros, presented the bill of Educational Research and Innovation. The research school will be based at Umeå University, starting autumn 2001. Partner universities will be Kalmar University, Mid Sweden University and the University of Gävle.

In addition to investing a total of SEK twelve million in this research school of gender science, the Swedish government wants the new Swedish Research Council to invest at least SEK ten million on gender research.

In order to increase gender equality in higher education, these seats of learning are expected to undertake positive action in the recruitment of graduates to research schools and so-called recruitment positions. This means that when candidates are more or less equal in merits, a candidate of the underrepresented sex should take precedence. Furthermore, all supervisors within the research programme will receive special training on gender equality and gender perspectives.

Courses in gender research for journalists

In order to give journalists wanting to write about gender research more information on their subject, the Swedish Secretariat for Gender Research arranges two courses on gender issues during the autumn 2000. The first course deals with gender and economy and discusses issues such as wages, labour market and leadership. The second course deals with gender and medicine and brings up the question of why womens’ diseases are rarely seen as an interesting subject for research. For two days, leading reseachers in each field will present their research to journalists.

The Secretariat is planning to carry through more courses for journalists during 2001.
