Women's
Worlds conference - UGANDA 2002
For the last Women's World conference in Tromso, Norway, I
coordinated a group (Jeff Hearn, Michael Kaufman,
Jorgen Lorentzen, and a few others) to organize a
series of panels for men who support women's equality. These were
well attended and included profeminist men from all over the world.
This year, I have again been invited to coordinate the
setting up of four panels that will focus on
different areas of men's support for women's equality
in different parts of the world. These four are:
1) workplace/organization (sex discrimination in work, sexual
harassment)
2) essential human rights (work for right to own property, control one's
body, be free of genital mutilation, right to vote, etc.)
3) combatting men's violence against women
4) work/family balance/fatherhood
If you are interested in participating in these panels, please let me
know.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After the enormous success of the Tromso conference last summer (1999), I
thought list members might want to begin to think about the next Women's
Worlds conference to be held in Kampala, Uganda in 2002.
Many years ago, Jeff Hearn and I organized a set of sessions for the WW
conference held in Dublin in 1987. For
the 1999 conference I worked with
Jeff, Jorgen Lorentzen in Norway, Michael Kaufman in Canada, and a few
other men to plan a track called "Gendering Men" for the Tromso
conference.
A significant number of profeminist
men from around the world went to the
conference, and it was a fantastic netowrking opportunity for many people.
I've been asked by the conference organizers to again take the
responsibility for organizing a series of sessions for profeminist men at
the conference. I've begun to think
about the themes I would like to
organize sessions around, representing the places where I think profeminist
men around the world are currently engaged in activism that might bring
some of us to the conference. I'll
probably get to do four sessions, and
I've been thinking about organizing them around themes that woudl generate
the most interest, especially from men who will attend from the economic
south.
I imagine the four areas will be something like; (1) men's violence against
women; (2) men's support for women's basic political and legal rights; (3)
fatherhood and men's support for feminist initiatives inthe family; (4)
health, health care delivery, and HIV.
I send you below some information about the WW conference and the passing
of the mantle from Tromso to Kampala.
It would be great to set our sights on the possibility of some of us
actually meeting in Uganda in 2002. I
recall that in 1987, I went to
Dublin having never met many of the men whom I knew would be there,
including Jeff Hearn, with whom I had corresponded in that antique medium
of letters. It was a marvelously
energizing moment when we encountered
each other and it really energized my work to know that there were men in
other countries who were working on similar issues.
If you are interested in participating, please let me know.
As you can
imagine, all male participants are expected to pay their own way, so that
scholarships can be offered to women from the economic South.
